LIZARD PENINSULA BEACHES  Pilchard

The Lizard is practically an island with the sea on three sides including the Helston estuary. So there are plenty of beaches to choose from.

Kynance Cove

Kynance Cove

Voted by the Saturday Times as one of the top 30 finest beaches in the UK. The contrast between the white sandy beach and the dark rock bolders on the beach with the turquoise waters on a sunny day a beautiful beach. At high tide the white sands are under water so it is best to time your visit around low tide. The eco-friendly café is brilliant and has fantastic views.

There is a National Trust car park at the top which is under 10 minute drive from the Cellars and then a 10 to 15 minute downhill walk to the beach. The walk to Kynance Cove from the Cellars along the coastal path is very scenic and is probably about a 50/60 minute walk.

Poldhu

Poldhu

This is a great family sandy beach with a nearby car park which is free November to March and an open all year café which we would recommend. It faces west and is set in a sheltered cove.

The surf is gentle in the summer so great for new surfers. Next to the café you can hire wetsuits and surfboards and have surf lessons with Dan Joel’s surf school. In the autumn winter the surf can be more challenging. Poldhu is north of Mullion and is about a 15 minute drive from the Cellars.

Church Cove, Gunawalloe

A short walk from Poldhu is a lovely sandy beach owned by the National Trust.

The tiny church of St Wynwallow is located to the north side of the beach hence the name of the beach.

Coverack

Coverack

Coverack not only has a lovely small fishing harbour but also has a lovely sand and pebble beach. Apparently it is ideal for anglers and also for divers. There are a set of treacherous rocks juts off the coast that has caused lots of shipwrecks.

We love having coffee in the local stores which has a small café area. The old RNLI boathouse is now a fish and chip restaurant and there is a pub in the village called the Paris hotel named after a shipwreck. There is a Coverack windsurfing school. Coverack is further round the Lizard Peninsula and is probably closer to half an hour drive from the Cellars.

Kennack Sands

Kennack Sands

Kennack Sands is a big beach split into two. The far beach allows dogs all year round and is designated a nature reserve. The main beach is popular among surfers.

Apparently due to its unique underwater topography there are often waves up to 5ft. There is the Kennack Surf School and a Kennack Dive school. Kennack Sands is home to a number of shipwrecks.

The cliffs above Kennack Sands are apparently often a good place for spotting basking sharks in early summer. There are a couple of small cafes and a gift shop. Kennack Sands is near Ruan Minor and is about 15 minutes drive from the Cellars.

More Information

Praa Sands

Praa Sands

Praa Sands is not strictly a beach on the Lizard Peninsula as it is north of Helston and Porthleven but it is worth mentioning as it is only about a 30 minute drive from the Cellars and is also in the top 30 finest beaches in the UK as voted by the Saturday Times.

Praa Sands is a village and an extensive sandy beach which stretches for about a mile. In the summer the town and beach are popular with families and it can get quite busy. Other facilities in the town include a fish and chip shop, a lively pub right on the beach front, a post office, general stores, a surf shop and a golf club. Praa Sands is a popular surfing beach and is well known for it’s powerful waves.
